Trustees
The board of trustees can include up to 12 voting members, including eight elected from the general membership, and four who may be appointed from the larger community. Terms last for three years.
Elected members
Brenda Boylan, Chairwoman
Brenda has served on the board of trustees since 2005, and is its current chairwoman. A resident of New Brunswick, Brenda works for Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey in Metuchen. She has daughters in first and fourth grades.
Leonard Jenkins, Vice Chairman
Leonard has been on the board of trustees since 2007. He lives in New Brunswick with his family, and works as an engineer. Lenny has two children in the charter school.
Rocio Garcia
A resident on New Brunswick since she was 6, Rocio continues to live here with her family. She graduated from Rutgers with bachelor’s degree in psychology, she now works for legal services of New Jersey as an advocate for the disabled poor in pursuit of Supplementary Security Income benefits. She has a son in the sixth grade.
Luis has been on the board since 2010. Luis lives in New Brunswick, and has two daughters who attend the charter school.
Nancy LaParo
Nancy was elected to the board in 2011. Nancy works as a systems engineer for Telcordia and lives in Highland Park with her family. She holds an MBA degree from Rutgers University. Her daughter Eleanor attends fifth grade.
David has been on the board of trustees since 2005. Formerly an English teacher and a newspaper editor, David lives in New Brunswick with his family. He has a daughter in fourth grade.
Maria joined the board in 2010. She is a Professor of Media Arts and Design, as well as Department Coordinator at Middlesex County College. In addition to teaching, Maria has many years of experience as a working artist and graphic designer. She has a son in kindergarten and a daughter in fourth grade.
Maria Vivar has been on the board of trustees since 2007. She lives in New Brunswick, where she is active in the Hispanic community through Lazos America Unida. She has two children in the charter school.
Community members
Jeff Crum’s involvement with the school began when his employer, Build With Purpose, assigned him to help the school through its recent expansion project. After working closely with the board and its Growth & Sustainability Committee throughout the project, Jeff accepted a term on the board, where he continues to advise the school on facilities and grounds.
Originally an elected member of the board, Larry Patton asked to remain on the board after his daughters transferred to their local school in Metuchen. Larry is also the Head of School at the Princeton Charter School.
