About the Hiring Process

We strive to find the most suitable candidates for our school and to assess them fairly. Our hiring process is broken down into several steps:

1. Initial contact - Candidates contact us through recruitment events, job ads, the njhire.com web site, or our own web site. We assess their qualifications based on their experience as described in their resumes, and we assess their communication skills as demonstrated in their emails and/or letters.

2. Initial screening - We speak to the most appropriate candidates on the phone and ask basic questions about their experience. We try to get a sense of their approach to teaching.

3. Initial interview - We invite some of the screened candidates for initial interviews with the Hiring Committee. The committee asks questions about their motivation (why they are applying for the job), knowledge of our school, past job responsibilities, teaching techniques, and community experience. The committee also answers any questions the candidates may have.
(Hint: We want to hire people who are aligned with our mission, well informed about our school, and committed to community-based education.)

4. Candidates who are selected by the Hiring Committee are brought back for a second "teaching" interview for which they are asked to prepare a short lesson. Over the summer, the second interview may not include actual teaching--just a meeting with additional staff members and parents.

5. The Hiring Committee checks references and recommends candidates for hire. The Executive Director (a member of the committee) contacts the recommended candidates with formal job offers and negotiates the intial agreement.

At all points in the process, we try to communicate clearly and promptly with candidates. We do sometimes take a long time with decisions, and we try to keep people informed about our progress.

Because we receive a large number of inquiries and have a very small administrative staff, it is not always possible to respond personally to all letters and emails making initial contact. However, we welcome phone calls from candidates following up on their applications. We are looking to create a diverse and dynamic staff and we welcome non-traditional applicants.
